For the deeper understanding of...
For the deeper understanding of God which has come to me through the study of Christian Science, I am truly grateful. I had been most antagonistic, convinced that Christian Scientists either had no problems and were "up in the clouds," or ignored them, along with all evil, entirely. I had to learn that Christian Science teaches one how to overcome evil through God's law, which, spiritually understood, erases error, or false beliefs, thereby bringing forth the fruits of healing and revealing the holiness (wholeness) of man and his at-one-ment with God. This is one of the most precious unfoldments which can come to an individual. I am grateful for Mary Baker Eddy the revelator, Discoverer, and Founder of Christian Science, who gives us this great truth in our textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures."
I also thought that Christian Science was a form of will power or hypnotism. When I read the biograph, "The Life of Mary Baker Eddy" by Sibyl Wilbur, and learned of our Leader's experience in writing and including the chapter "Animal Magnetism Unmasked," and studied this chapter of our textbook, it became plain to me that Christian Science is opposed to any practice of mental manipulation. For the practitioner's alertness in early detecting my need for this corrective thinking, which freed me in large measure from the temptations of personal sense, I am grateful.
To be able to stand up straight without pain and walk with ease and freedom is a blessing which came several years ago as a result of a healing of what I was told was the aftereffect of acute nephritis, with recovery doubtful. I was on a diet, taking two kinds of medicine daily, besides stimulants. Having reached the point where nothing helped me, and not caring much whether I kept on or not, I called a practitioner. Never shall I forget her expression of joy and hope in response to my call. She quoted the first two verses of Romans 8. When I reminded her they were written by Paul a long time ago and very likely meant him, and that it would take a long time to heal me, as I had had this difficulty for nearly eight years, she replied with these words from the Bible: "Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation" (II Cor. 6:2) and the first verse of the hymn beginning, "This is the day the Lord hath made" (Christian Science Hymnal, No. 342).
