In the chapter on Fruitage in...
In the chapter on Fruitage in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy there is a testimony which was always a favorite of mine when I was a child. I looked to it as a sample of what I could do, and I had read it so much I could recite it verbatim. This testimony of which I speak starts on page 635. I had occasion definitely to put into action the words of the mother in this testimony, and I should like to tell of the resultant healing.
When one of our sons was just a ear old and beginning to walk by himself, he toddled into the bathroom. There he put his hand on a heater that had been going for several hours. I ran to him quickly and took his hand from the heater, cupped it in mine, and began to talk the truth to him. The pain seemed intense, and it was impossible to quiet his crying. I felt I needed help from a practitioner, but when I tried to call, there was no answer. Then the words of the woman in the testimony came to me: "What would you do if you were out of the reach of a practitioner? Now is your time to prove God's power and presence." A great sense of peace came over me as I realized that no other aid was necessary, and as I met my sense of fear for the child, as Mrs. Eddy admonishes us to do, I relinquished the little fellow from my thought to God's constant care.
In about fifteen minutes he began to stop crying, and it was not long before he was quiet, only crying out occasionally. I looked at the hand then, and my first impulsive thought was, Oh, the evidence is awful! Quickly I reversed this. I knew that the only evidence I could accept was the true idea of man. I covered the hand and, sitting down, rocked the little boy and sang hymns. I sang them with an overwhelming sense of gratitude for the presence and power of God and for the understanding I had gained of Christian Science. I called the practitioner then, related what had happened, and asked for help to take care of all the mortal mind beliefs about burns.
