DIVINE FORCES

DIVINE forces are the attributes of God, the creative Principle, or Father, of all that is real. We see them evidenced in such compelling qualities of thought as unselfed love and wisdom; as justice, truthfulness, and intelligence, which constitute man in God's image. Because divine forces are invariable in their action, they are laws of God, the expression of His changeless will for good. When understood, they protect all that is God-derived in human experience, and they constantly unfold good in its infinite scope and meaning.

Christian Science explains these facts, which are of tremendous importance in an age that claims new release of destructive material forces, or laws, derived from matter. Mary Baker Eddy writes in "Unity of Good" (p. 35): "I ask, Which was first, matter or power? That which was first was God, immortal Mind, the Parent of all. But God is Truth, and the forces of Truth are moral and spiritual, not physical. They are not the merciless forces of matter. What then are the so-called forces of matter? They are the phenomena of mortal mind, and matter and mortal mind are one; and this one is a misstatement of Mind, God."

Humanity gains a great release of spiritual power when it departs from matter and the belief that life is dependent upon it, and comes to understand real life in God. The release of moral and spiritual forces, which follows the understanding of God as one infinite Mind and of man as spiritually perfect, results in the ability to subdue matter and to destroy its disturbed conditions—sin, sickness, and death. But under greater development of spiritual power, which is even now taking place, matter is destined to be proved a myth, and entirely disappear.
