Christian Science Committees on Publication DEFEND OUR RELIGIOUS FREEDOM

[From annual reports]

France

For the first time in France Christian Science has been confronted with the officially recognized medical laws of the country. An inquiry was ordered by an examining magistrate to decide whether or not he should indict our movement for the "illegal practice of medicine." Practitioners who were called for questioning were able to take their stand effectively on the first paragraph of Article VIII, Section 22, of the Manual of The Mother Church by Mary Baker Eddy without raising any protest on the part of the police officer who was charged with the inquiry. Thus our Cause was defended and its dignity preserved, as Mrs. Eddy intended.

A counterinquiry was later conducted by a professor of the Faculty of Medicine. It was, it appears, quite unusual to hold such a counterinquiry at the stage the proceedings had then reached. This in itself represents a remarkable demonstration for us and enabled the examining magistrate to put an end to the affair by ruling that there was no ground for prosecution.
