TRUE IDENTITY VERSUS MATERIAL MASQUERADE

HAVE you ever watched the disbanding of a parade of masqueraders, when masks are cast aside, gruesome false faces removed? Satan so vividly portrayed, the ugly little imp, the lowly beggar, even the robber pirate and the cruel witch, now laugh merrily with the beautiful princess and the noble Sir Galahad ! The masquerade is ended, and the actors resume their normal identities.

How like the parade of mortal mind, which seems to wend its way through the streets of mortal existence. Poverty, uncertainty of the future, evil, sensuality, the cruel fear of a dread disease — what are these but masks, false beliefs, as hideous and as unreal as the false faces of Satan, the witch, the robber pirate. To remove these masks, which hide the real identity, the God-created spiritual man referred to in the first chapter of Genesis, is the joyous work of the Christian Scientist.

Christian Science teaches the student what is real and what is unreal. In "Unity of Good" Mary Baker Eddy writes (p. 49): "you cannot simultaneously serve the mammon of materiality and the God of spirituality. There are not two realities of being, two opposite states of existence. One should appear real to us, and the other unreal, or we lose the Science of being. Standing in no basic Truth, we make 'the worse appear the better reason,' and the unreal masquerades as the real, in our thought."
