DISEASE IS MENTAL

The Christian Scientist heals solely through his understanding of the truths of God and man. He heals not by matter or the human mind, but by divine Mind — the Mind reflected by Christ Jesus when he achieved his mighty victories over evil. Infinite Mind is master of so-called mortal mind and does not call to its aid anything finite to assist it in destroying evil. Any attempt to heal disease or other mortal discords from the standpoint of their being physical actualities is not in accord with the Science of Mind-healing.

Jesus knew that the supposed cause of all human suffering is in erring mortal mind—not in matter. Soon after he healed the man at the pool of Bethesda who had been afflicted for thirty-eight years, we read, "Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee" (John 5:14). The specific error cherished in the thought of the sufferer which had seemed to cause this condition we are not told, but we know the Master's spiritualized consciousness gave him the power and ability to recognize it, know its unreality, and cast it out.

Christian Science makes it clear that disease is the externalization of false mortal belief. Therefore, regardless of the name or nature of the physical discord, the mental state of the sufferer must be taken into consideration and false belief corrected through the understanding of divine Mind and the spiritual facts which it evolves, if healing is to take place.
