More than twenty-five years ago, while I was still in college, ugly growths appeared on the fingers of my hands. I was seized with an overwhelming sense of fear at the alarming rate with which they seemed to grow and spread. It caused me much embarrassment, and I found myself keeping my fists clenched and my hands covered and out of sight as much as possible, for the unsightly condition elicited fearful remarks from those who saw them.

My family had become interested in Christian Science years before, when my youngest sister was healed of bronchial pneumonia after specialists had said she could not live through the night. During the succeeding years, I myself had been the beneficiary of the healing power of Christian Science on many occasions and had witnessed the efficacy of its teachings with other members of our family. It was natural, therefore, that my parents should suggest that I call a Christian Science practitioner for treatment. I seemed, however, to be experiencing a phase of great uncertainty and confusion about many things and stated that I wished to have medical attention. Instead of trying to persuade me to follow their suggestion, they very wisely permitted me to carry out my own desire, and I sought the advice of a physician whom I knew, who directed me to a specialist.

At the hospital to which I was taken, the specialist was so interested in the case that he called in several colleagues. They told me that the growths had reached a cancerous state and advised X-ray treatments. This pronouncement added greatly to my sense of panic, but I agreed to having the prescribed treatments, and they were continued for some months, during which time the condition grew progressively worse.
