MAN LIVES BY GOD'S WORD

THE Holy Scriptures abound with the unimpeachable authority of Almighty God, one universal, impartial Father. Christ Jesus preached and demonstrated God's oneness, allness, and all-inclusiveness. He proved man's sonship with the Father by destroying sin, healing sickness, and raising the dead. But Jesus' mighty works were accomplished only after he had proved the futility of evil's endeavor to discredit his divine sonship.

Satan's mesmeric technique is graphically portrayed in the fourth chapter of Matthew's Gospel. Its crafty design to ensnare Jesus is epitomized in the suggestive phrase, "If thou be the Son of God." Subtle, yet aggressive, temptation's purpose is to instill doubt and confusion. Jesus was undeceived by evil's pretenses, therefore never inveigled by its suggestions or claims to power. While he was not immune from temptation, he was at all times temptation's master.

In the light of Christian Science we learn that man, God's image and likeness, being spiritual, can be identified only with harmony, goodness, and purity. Man's individuality — his divine sonship—can never be alienated from Spirit, God. He cannot be tempted to believe in evil or to be controlled by will power. And neither can he be dispossessed of his rich heritage of Godlikeness.
