I was reared in a devout home...
I was reared in a devout home where religion of the conventional kind of that day, mellowed by my parents' honest living and Christian charity, was the rule. The limitations, fears, and insufficiency of those theological teachings and the desire to satisfy the higher aspirations of my heart caused me, while yet a youth, to seek a better understanding of God and my relationship to Him. I investigated various philosophies and teachings, but they too failed to bring any lasting satisfaction or peace.
Then, as I studied the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, the pages of the Bible were illumined. I was familiar with the Bible as the result of regular Sunday School attendance and family reading, and this helped me to grasp the correlation of the Biblical passages and the corresponding and interpretative statements in Science and Health. At that time and ever since, the regular study of the weekly Lesson-Sermons as presented in the Christian Science Quarterly has been an aid to my education and spiritual progress.
The study of the spiritual facts of man and his relationship to his creator brought healing from physical and mental discords, which was proof to me of the truth of these comforting words from Science and Health (p. 494): "Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need." This truth, so profound in its implications, I have demonstrated in the degree that I have correctly applied my understanding of divine Principle in my experiences. How indisputable are the words of the Psalmist (Ps. 40:5), "Many, O Lord my God, are thy wonderful works which thou hast done, and thy thoughts which are to us-ward: they cannot be reckoned up in order unto thee: if I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be numbered."
