RADICAL RELIANCE

Jesus' words are fraught with divine wisdom for the disciple of today (Matt. 6:24): "No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon."

It is mentally impossible to hold to two standpoints and work from both at the same time. Mary Baker Eddy says on page 270 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures": "One only of the following statements can be true: (1) that everything is matter; (2) that everything is Mind. Which one is it?" The allness of God precludes any possibility of the existence of matter, for God is Mind, Spirit, and His creation is wholly spiritual. This fact when understood forever sweeps away the attempted mixture of material methods of healing with spiritual. Any erroneous practice of employing what might be termed harmless remedies as aids to Christian Science healing only shows a divided faith, which weakens one's power to heal.

Many healings in Christian Science have resulted when the patient's thought has been rid of the desire to seek material aid. Pain and suffering are not in matter, but in mortal mind, and their cure, to be permanent, must be sought in the divine Mind. This was proved in the experience of the writer when a member of her household, suffering severe pain and inflammation due to an accident, was persuaded to have Science treatment.
