Many beautiful proofs of God's...
Many beautiful proofs of God's care, made manifest in physical healings, harmonious adjustments, restoration of lost articles, and increased understanding of God and of man as His reflection, have been the result of my study of Christian Science. Each experience held a lesson for me. A recent one brought with it much spiritual growth.
I am grateful for the loving assistance from nurses and associates of the Christian Science Benevolent Association Sanatorium, Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, while I was on nursing care. One evening I was in my room sewing. A needle dropped to the floor unnoticed, and later, as I walked across the room barefoot, I stepped on it in such a way that it went deep into my foot, and the point broke off. I felt no pain, and the next morning went on duty as usual. I spoke to my supervisor about the incident. She said that if I could realize that matter has no power to harm, the needle point would come out without causing me any distress. Right then I saw clearly that all matter is unintelligent; that my foot, as matter, was unintelligent and could not know that a needle was in it; that the needle point, as matter, was unintelligent and had no power to harm me.
I went back to my duties, limping slightly, but the limp was soon over-come, and for several weeks I walked without any difficulty. Then one evening the suggestion came to me: You are not experiencing any difficulty now, but that needle is still in your foot, and it may cause you much trouble in the future. You had better dig it out. Mrs. Eddy writes in Science and Health (pp. 392, 393), "The issues of pain or pleasure must come through mind, and like a watchman forsaking his post, we admit the intruding belief, forgetting that through divine help we can forbid this entrance." Forsaking my post, I proceeded to dig into my foot, but was unable to reach the needle. I did not sleep well that night. My foot throbbed with pain, and in the morning I walked with difficulty. By evening I was unable to bear my weight on that foot at all. Thinking about matter, digging into matter, and fearing the result had produced their crop of pain, inflammation, and swelling.
