A neighbor of mine gave me...
A neighbor of mine gave me some Christian Science literature to read with the statement that God made all that was made and that it was very good. She repeated the definition of God as given in Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy (p. 465) and asked me to come over the next morning to read the Lesson-Sermon from the Christian Science Quarterly with her. This I did. I told my friend that the selections were beautiful and that I was interested, but that I did not altogether understand what was read. For three or four months thereafter she gave me literature to read and invited me to lectures on Christian Science. She asked if she could take my children to the Sunday School, to which I consented, and I have always been grateful that they have had this advantage.
Soon my friend was transferred to the West Coast, but the "cup of cold water" given me did its healing work. I continued to read the literature and was very much impressed with the testimonies of healing in The Christian Science Journal and the Sentinel. For about thirty-five years I had been suffering from severe pains in my head and neck which lasted three or four days. I had gone to one doctor after another, and finally I was told by madical specialists that there was no known cure for the trouble. I went home, threw out all the medicine I had been taking, and decided to depend on God from then on. I read very earnestly in Science and Health by our Leader for two or three hours each day for about two years. Gradually the suffering decreased, and finally, when the fear that the pain would return left me, I suffered no more.
I am very grateful for this healing experience because it proved to me that God is Principle and all-powerful, all-loving, and infinite. I am grateful to be a student of this Science. I am also grateful that my son, who was a Marine during the Second World War, came through uninjured and is a more discerning thinker than before his war experiences. For class instruction and for membership in The Mother Church and in a branch church I am grateful.—(Mrs.) Ava Lula Carrell, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
