POWER

O Israel , forgetful of the cloud,
The pillar of fire, the manna—was the rod
Of unselfed will so readily disavowed?
Where did you think to find the power of God?
Where did you think to find it? In the ways
Of alien people? In a lax content?
In sensual compensation? In the praise
Of those to whom Baal was omniscient?

And we, this day, where shall we look for might?
To violent quakes of self-destroying earth?
No! to the primal law, "Let there be light!"
To the imperative genesis, the birth
Renewing and renewing, into Mind,
Whose love-crowned rod must govern all mankind.
