PERENNIAL SUNLIGHT

Winter and summer, night and day, during storms as well as in fair weather, the sun shines unremittingly. When its light fades, it is not because of variability in the sun. At times portions of the earth's surface are obscured by clouds and the sun's rays are of little avail for warmth and light. Since this is common knowledge no fear is felt, but all rest assured that in due time the sun will reappear and shine as brightly as before.

An explanation of the spiritual, or real, in terms of matter cannot be made. However, similes often furnish helpful hints concerning reality. According to Christian Science God, good, is omnipresent Love and Life. He creates man like Himself, perfect, complete, without blemish. Because God is perfect, His reflection, man, is perfect. These are eternal verities. They always have been true, are true now, will be forever, regardless of any evidence of the physical senses to the contrary. As Mary Baker Eddy so succinctly states (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 299), "Corporeal sense, or error, may seem to hide Truth, health, harmony, and Science, as the mist obscures the sun or the mountain; but Science, the sunshine of Truth, will melt away the shadow and reveal the celestial peaks."

Another simile, on page 344 of "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany" by Mrs. Eddy, helped clarify to one student the unchanging nature of God and His relation to man: "If we say that the sun stands for God, then all his rays collectively stand for Christ, and each separate ray for men and women." When harmony reigns in human affairs, it is not difficult to appreciate the goodness and power of God. However, if storms of error arise, it often requires considerable fidelity and courage to maintain the facts of being.
