BEING NEWBORN

In the third chapter of John's Gospel is the account of Jesus' conversation with Nicodemus, who came to Jesus by night. When Nicodemus acknowledged that God must be with the Master in order for him to perform miracles, Jesus answered, "Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God." Then there followed a discussion which indicated the great distance between the material-mindedness of the rulers of the Jews and the spiritual perception and understanding of Christ Jesus.

Endeavoring to lift the thought of Nicodemus, Jesus continued: "Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again."

Christian Science is enabling us today to understand what the new birth is and the importance of individually striving for it. Mary Baker Eddy writes of our church in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 35), "We can unite with this church only as we are new-born of Spirit, as we reach the Life which is Truth and the Truth which is Life by bringing forth the fruits of Love,—casting out error and healing the sick."
