CHILDREN OF DESTINY

Mary Baker Eddy writes (Pulpit and Press, p. 9), "Ah, children, you are the bulwarks of freedom, the cement of society, the hope of our race!"

The care and education of children have never been more important than they are today. Spiritually-minded parents have a responsibility to their offspring which is a responsibility to the nation, and indeed also to the race. Children brought up to love and practice the simple truths of Christian Science have great opportunities given them to help humanity, and their work is destined to advance the welfare of mankind.

Children played an important part in the Bible. Turning over the sacred pages, we are reminded of little Samuel, asleep in the temple precincts at a time when the light of spiritual illumination had grown dim in Israel, when the discernment of the aged Eli no longer reflected the clarity of Spirit; when the lamp of the Lord was dimmed almost to extinction, so that the ark of God was hardly discernible in the gloom. This was a crucial moment in the history of Israel, The clear vision of a prophet was essential to the welfare of the people. Had the ark of God been lost sight of, the safety of the people— which the ark symbolized—would have been jeopardized. God called to His people, and a little boy was the first to answer Him—a child destined to become a prophet in Israel.
