When I was a small child, my mother became interested in Christian Science through the healing of a neighbor's daughter. This young woman had been through two operations, and she said she would rather die than go through a third. Turning to Christian Science, she was completely healed. My mother started to study this Science and, as her understanding grew, to practice it. She became a practitioner, and through her work I saw many types of disease healed.
When my own daughter was a baby, she was very near death. A doctor was called to diagnose the case, but being unable to determine what the disease was, he wanted to take her to a hospital for observation and experimentation. I refused to let her go, saying, "What God cannot do, man need not attempt" (Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, p. 231). I sang many of the hymns from the Christian Science Hymnal, especially No. 148:
