From early youth I had been...
From early youth I had been brought up in the Church of England, and later I became a Sunday School teacher. I had always felt very near to God, asking Him for guidance in all things and receiving many wonderful results through prayer.
As I grew up I was not satisfied with what I had been taught about God and so went continually in search of a new doctrine. After much searching I ceased attending church. About this time an unsightly condition appeared on both of my legs, with discoloration and painful veins, and shortly afterwards I was forced to leave my employment as a shop assistant, because it was impossible for me to stand for any length of time. Full of anxiety, I visited a hospital. There they informed me that I had a circulatory disorder and bad varicose veins; also that I was too young for injection and they could do nothing for me. I was greatly discouraged by the thought of limping painfully about all my life and not enjoying the sports which other adolescents took part in. I tried various drugs and medicines for relief and spent my pocket money on expensive treatments, all of which proved ineffective.
During the recent war, when the girls of my age were conscripted for war work, I first heard of Christian Science. At the factory to which I had been sent, one of the machine setters was a Christian Scientist, and on many occasions I felt the results of his prayerful work, I first read the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, on his recommendation. It seemed a wonderful book, and although I understood very little of what I read at that time, it appeared to be just the religion I had been seeking, being one which attributed all power to God; but I failed to have any faith in the power of Christian Science to heal sickness.
