Jointly Maintained and Well Located

On November 10, 1903, representatives of Second, Third, Fourth, and Fifth churches, New York City, organized the "Central Reading Room Association in New York City." This association established the first jointly maintained Christian Science Reading Room in the movement.

Miss Anne Dodge, C.S.B., a pupil of Mary Baker Eddy living in New York, had received a letter from our Leader expressing the desire that a central Reading Room be opened by the New York churches in the business section of the city. In her letter, Mrs. Eddy further stated that if this step were taken within two weeks she would herself supply literature to start the Reading Room activity. She added, "Nothing is more needed for the good of the Cause than this Central Reading Room in New York City except better healing."

Three years later, in London, a group of Christian Scientists who met together for lunch decided that it would be desirable to read and study for a short period during the luncheon interval each day. Beginning in February, 1907, and continuing for about two years, these men used the waiting room of a London practitioner's office for this purpose. As the number of students of Christian Science wishing to study at the noon hour grew, it became apparent that a larger room was necessary.
