LETTERS TO THE PRESS from Christian Science Committees on Publication

Lancashire, England Announcer, Southport

The account given by "Crusader" of his visit to a Wednesday evening testimony meeting at First Church of Christ. Scientist, Southport, is most interesting. "Crusader" was evidently favorably impressed, and his very friendly and unbiased description of what he saw and heard at that meeting is much appreciated. His report, however, raises one or two important points regarding the healing work of Christian Science, and I feel that it would be helpful to your leaders if a little more light were thrown upon this important subject. I should, therefore, be grateful if you would kindly publish this letter in the next issue of your paper.

First of all, may I make it clear that Christian Science is by no means a humanly evolved mental system the main object of which is to heal the sick. Its teachings, based squarely on those of the Bible, and particularly on the words and works of Christ Jesus, fully accept and appreciate the Master's command as recorded in the sixteenth chapter of St. Mark, "Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature." And as the fruit of doing this intelligently—indeed, as proof that the Word of God is being preached as Jesus preached it — Christian Scientists expect to see in some degree the fulfillment of the prophecy that completes Jesus' command. "And these signs shall follow them that believe: In my name shall they cast out devils: they shall speak with new tongues: the shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them: they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover."
