[Original testimony in German]

Just as the man whom Peter...

Just as the man whom Peter healed at the gate of the temple joyfully praised God, I too with a joyful and grateful heart should like to relate my rescue at sea, as well as a healing that was connected with this experience.

In 1940 my firm sent me on business to Norway. During the crossing the ship in which I sailed was torpedoed and sunk, and I was injured. Conditions prevailing that night were so bad that death seemed imminent. Because of the stormy sea, the burning and rapidly sinking ship, and my injury, it did not seem possible that I could be saved. I prayed aloud, "God is present." and the moment the first waves broke over the deck, one of the crew took me to the boat deck. From there, without any effort on my part, I was taken to the only seaworthy lifeboat. But we were still in great danger. One of the naval craft accompanying us came towards us at great speed and nearly rammed us.

Although I was in pain and the conditions did not testify to God's nearness, I clung to the thought of His presence. It was long after midnight when we were overtaken by a group of screening vessels and taken to port. Fourteen hours after the disaster I received medical attention. The doctor said that because of the delay, the injury had become greatly aggravated. When I awoke from the anesthetic I was told that complications might set in, and if so, the leg would have to be amputated. In the course of a long conversation I was told which nerves, ligaments, or sinews had been torn or injured, leaving one leg from five to six inches shorter than the other. During the interview the thought came to me, although I did not utter it, "Doctor, you do not know everything!" and deep peace and great joy filled my heart.
