In I Kings (19:11,12) we read,...

In I Kings (19:11,12) we read, "And, behold, ... a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in metes the rocks before the Lord; but the Lord was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake: but the Lord was not in the earthquake: and after the earthquake a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice."God not being at war or in it war, how could man, the son of God. be in a material condition which God knew nothing about? The power of Truth, being ever present, was my constant companion during my four years of service in the United States Navy, over half of which was spent in the Pacific theater of operations.

Many material difficulties were overcome, some of which were seasickness, painful ear infection and temporary loss of hearing, confusion and discord under Navy routine, and discordant relationships. I experienced protection during air raids and safety in typhoons. Perhaps the outstanding experience occurred at Lingayen Gulf in the Philippine Islands during the invasion there. Our ship was an LST flagship loaded with ammunition, and it was forced to make a beaching during an air raid. After the raid we started to unload. The unloading was going along smoothly until about midnight, when the Japanese mountain artillery started firing at the ships on the beach, of which we were one. A United States destroyer was counterfiring for us, and our ship was in the cross fire. Shrapnel was falling around us. and several casualties occurred. During this experience. I was realizing the truth of Mary Baker Eddy's statement in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 571). "Clad in the panoply of Love, human hatred cannot reach you," and the statement in Acts (17:28), "In him we live, and move, and have our being." I realized that the only true ammunition was the Word of God. and that I had all the ammunition I needed to destroy material beliefs because I lived in God. I also realized that the spiritual concept of transportation was "hid with Christ in God" (Col. 3:3), where material sense could not see it or use it for a target.

Just then we received orders to leave the beach, and as we took the human footsteps, it seemed as though a giant had pushed the ship away from the beach and out into clear water, where we floated downstream to safety. Just as the ship swung around and started to float downstream, five shells exploded in the exact spot where the ship had been anchored.
