For thirteen years I have enjoyed...
For thirteen years I have enjoyed reading the testimonies published in the Christian Science periodicals. Now I feel that it is my turn to express my gratitude.
I was very much in need of help when Christian Science was presented to me. For twelve years I had suffered from nervous prostration. At first I went from one doctor to another and from one type of medicine to another; I went to chiropractors, submitted to massage and electric treatments, animal magnetism, hypnotism, and every other material means for help, but all without avail. At times I received temporary relief, but never permanent help until Christian Science was presented to me by a stranger whom I had met and told of my difficulties. I wasted little time in borrowing "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy from a Christian Science Reading Room. Within two weeks I returned the borrowed book and purchased my own. My healing, which was complete and permanent, came gradually as my understanding of Christian Science increased. In Psalms (30:2) we read, "O Lord my God, I cried unto thee, and thou hast healed me."
I did not begin reading Science and Health at the beginning, but skimmed through sections of it, and while doing this I came upon these words (p. 218): "Why pray for the recovery of the sick, if you are without faith in God's willingness and ability to heal them? If you do believe in God, why do you substitute drugs for the Almighty's power, and employ means which lead only into material ways of obtaining help, instead of turning in time of need to God, divine Love, who is an ever-present help?" I stopped and immediately began to correct my thinking, because I certainly was substituting drugs for the Almighty's power, the only power. In that same hour I received an instantaneous healing. I then started to read the book from the beginning. Soon afterward I was introduced to the Christian Science Quarterly and began reading the Lesson-Sermons.
