OVERCOMING EVIL WITH GOOD

In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mary Baker Eddy writes (p. 571): "At all times and under all circumstances, overcome evil with good. Know thyself, and God will supply the wisdom and the occasion for a victory over evil." In these two sentences Mrs. Eddy furnishes rules that, when followed, provide the means with which to surmount all seeming difficulties. She declares firmly that evil must be overcome, not at times, but "at all times," with good.

When Mrs. Eddy urges, "Know thyself," what is that self whereof she speaks? Not the counterfeit object of material sense misnamed man, but the real man, made in the likeness of the one supreme, infinite God, good, forever held in divine Mind as the perfect reflection of Life, Truth, and Love. This spiritual, perfect man is your true selfhood and mine, the true identity of every individual. Spiritually to know or identify oneself as God's idea is the wisdom that enables one to be victorious over evil.

Christ Jesus, the master Metaphysician, laid the foundation for Christian Science during his three years' ministry. He proved the ever-present applicability of spiritual law by overcoming sickness and sin and raising the dead, finally overcoming death and the grave for himself. He stated (John 17:3), "This is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent."
