Affording Proof of Their Utility

[From the Field]

A woman from another town came into the Reading Room. She had seen in our local paper our advertisement of Science and Health and the facilities of our Reading Room and wished to see the book and to know more about it. She purchased a black leather edition of the textbook and a matching Concordance to "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. As she talked with the librarian, she explained that she had experienced consuming grief, from which she could find no relief. Friends had found her so morose they were now avoiding her. It was suggested that she look up "grief" and its opposite, "joy," in her newly purchased Concordance. She did this before leaving the counter, and the first message she read proved so heartening that the expression of her face changed. She took her books with her with new-found joy.

Within a month she had made use of the Reading Room study facilities on three occasions. She told the librarian that she had found the book so interesting that it was hard to stop reading it to go to work. She had read Science and Health through completely and was reading it a second time when a fellow worker noticed her absorption in her reading and inquired about the book. After a conversation about Science and Health the inquirer asked to borrow it. The woman said she couldn't spare it. She said she told her friend about Christian Science Reading Rooms and their lending libraries and suggested that she borrow or purchase a copy from a Reading Room.
