IN QUIET WAYS

A mighty wind once rent the mountainside
And brake the rocks apart; an earthquake came;
And then a fire; but these did not proclaim
God's presence in the world's chaotic tide.
For in a still small voice He spoke to guide
Elijah through the human, mortal claim
Of anxious thought. The prophet heard his name
And knowing God as All, on Him relied.

Our God bestows His Word in quietude
Today as well as then; our yearning hearts
Can rise above the gaunt and godless brood
Of fears to know the peace His love imparts.
So when in mortal storms our thinking strays,
We trust our God to guide in quiet ways.
