Signs of the Times

The Church

William T. Ellis and Earl L. Douglass in a column in the Star Journal Pueblo, Colorado

As Jesus said, the time is coming when the worship of God will not be localized, for it is a matter of the spirit; nevertheless, men still need the church quite as much as old Israel needed it. We should keep our thinking clear on this point. The valid reason for churchgoing is not because we like the preacher, or the form of service, or the sort of folk who attend. All of these factors may be absent, yet we should nonetheless go to church, primarily because we expect there to ... honor Him by our worship. ... Literally nothing else can take the place of regular worship in the appointed place of prayer.

What is today's greatest news? ... It is the unrecorded spiritual experience of uncounted men and women. By that word "spiritual" I mean more than is described by affections, ideals, aspirations, and convictions, though these are included. In the highest significance of the phrase, I have in mind the spiritual experiences of men and women who have this day been in conscious ... relation with their Lord. How countless and various are the temples wherein human hearts have talked with God, and God with them, as a man speaks to his friend.... These meetings of man with God outrank in real importance the myriads of business and political conferences that each day witnesses.
