GOD AT HAND AND AFAR OFF

Humanity's beliefs about the nature of God are variable and often vague. Therefore the need for a clear, demonstrable understanding of Him and for a reason for man's being is constantly felt by mankind. Today many gratefully acknowledge that they are finding a satisfying answer to the question of what God and man are through the teachings of Christian Science.

One who was crossing the ocean alone for the first time felt after several days that the way seemed endless, and that every hour was taking her farther from home and loved ones. Naturally, her thought turned to God. Somehow she knew that He was with her and also with those left behind; that He was indeed everywhere and would be with her wherever she went. Just how this could be, or what the nature of this protecting God was, she did not know; but for the time being the comfort of the thought was enough to quiet her fears. She was sustained by the promise (Ex. 33:14), "My presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest."

Later, when she was in need of physical healing, the help of Christian Science was sought, and the first glimpse was gained of the real nature of God and of how His tender love and care become practically and presently available to us through the teachings of this Science. A Christian Science practitioner directed the seeker to the following definition of God given in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy (p. 465): "God is incorporeal, divine, supreme, infinite Mind, Spirit, Soul, Principle, Life, Truth, Love."
