"TO HIM THE PORTER OPENETH"

Oh, may I be that porter at the door
Who knows his Shepherd, and is known of Him,
And serves in watchful singleness of mind!
May I be swift to keep the door close-barred
Against all carnal thief and robber claims.
And that which "climbeth up some other way,"
But swifter still to open wide the door
When comes the loving Shepherd of the sheep
And calls His sheep by name, and leads them out.
Make me to know His voice then, heed none else;
Await my name, and hear the guerdon given:
I come to bring you life abundantly!
