The religion I knew did not satisfy...
The religion I knew did not satisfy me nor answer my questions about God and His place in my life. Although I had attended church and Sunday School all my school years, in times of great need my prayers were not answered, and so I stopped going to church and praying. I was not happy, feeling that conditions in the world, both business and social, were chaotic, and wondered why strife, hate, fear, frustration, deception, jealousy, and resentment seemed to be everywhere. My, unanswered questions made me search the classics, psychology, philosophy, and many new cults. For weeks I was depressed and rebellious against what I thought life was.
One day a friend was discussing with me the average newspaper and its dramatic presentations of crime, accident, and disease. I told her how disturbed I had become on reading these articles, and that for this reason I had given up reading newspapers. She then told me of The Christian Science Monitor. the type of news it reports, and its method of presentation. However, I did little about this information until some months later when, while walking home, I saw a sign reading "Christian Science Reading Room." I went in, and that was the beginning of a new life for me. Upon reading the first few pages of the chapter on Prayer in the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, I was so elated that I knew within this book was the answer to all my questions. The depression and bitterness vanished with the reading of this book, and a serious vertebrae displacement which at the least turn of the head caused great pain was healed. This condition had necessitated my going to a specialist once or twice a week, and no permanent correction was promised. Since then, this provable truth has met all my needs, physical, financial, social, and moral, when understandingly applied.
Our periodicals are like personal talks with understanding, loving friends eager to straighten out one's thinking. The published testimonies have been a source of courage and inspiration.
