The following has, of all my...

The following has, of all my experiences, most clearly illustrated to me the instantaneous healing effect of genuine Christian Science. It is a wonderful thing to have experienced such a healing; it awakens thought to the infinite possibilities and significance of the discovery by Mrs. Eddy of the absolute truth about all things, which she has recorded for the enlightenment of all in her textbook. Science and Health.

In the winter of 1942 I entered an Officers' Candidate School in an eastern state, as a draftee with five months' Army experience. The extreme urgency of obtaining officers for our armed forces resulted in a training course calculated to eliminate those unsuited for commissions as rapidly as possible. The endurance and resourcefulness of each candidate were constantly taxed throughout the three months' course. In addition, it soon became evident to me that my professional background as a lawyer had left me poorly equipped for this particular schooling, which dealt primarily with electricity and communications. Being unfamiliar with the most common terminology of several of the subjects, I was greatly handicapped, and it became increasingly necessary for me to rely upon an understanding of the ever-presence and operation of the divine Mind as revealed in Christian Science, for guidance.

Realizing that if I understood more about the nature and functioning of divine Mind, this understanding would enlarge my conception of the capacity of man as its manifestation, and more closely identify me as that manifestation, I determined to learn more of this truth. Accordingly, I joined a Christian Science branch church in the vicinity of the post at which I was stationed, attended its services regularly, and became active in its committee work and business meetings. For a time the desire to know and serve God better continued to be my sole aim and ambition, and while this obedience to the: First Commandment continued, I successfully completed each phase of the training course. Toward the last, however, as the prospect of receiving a commission drew nearer and the material significance of it began to occupy my thought, I lost sight of this true purpose. Instead, the desire to become commissioned as an officer of the United States Army became an obsession with me, and I began to dread the possibility of failure. This fear soon manifested itself in a constant physical exhaustion that left me tense and increasingly apprehensive of the outcome.
