God First

The last hundred pages of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, consist of testimonies of Christian Science healing. These healings of many kinds of suffering and disease might well be called modern miracles brought about solely through the writer's own study of this textbook. Some of them are particularly interesting because in them the testifier states that it was not specifically for physical healing that the study of the book was undertaken, but to find God. And as he found God, found His unfailing power and presence to be a present demonstrable fact, not just a vague, far-off, after-death possibility, his own healing followed as naturally and as necessarily as morning follows night.

You ask, How could this be? The answer is simple. The illumination of consciousness which resulted from the study of this "key" to the Scriptures, the resurrection of thought from the tomb of materiality and fear, the ascension from mortal selfhood to the recognition of man's true and immortal selfhood as the image and likeness of God, so freed the one seeking God that no longer was he subject to the so-called laws of sickness and death which had been imposed upon him. "Like a prisoner, who had been kept in chains for years, I was suddenly set free." one writes (P. 644).

The Master said (Matt. 6:33), "Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you." Daily is this being proved true. Not long ago, a young woman came to Christian Science for healing. She had been a sufferer for many years. Materia medica having failed to meet her need, she turned at last to Christian Science and began diligently, almost desperately, to study the Bible and Science and Health. She also attended Christian Science church services and lectures. Each time she opened her books, she hoped that she would find in them some special sentence or thought which would bring about her healing; each time she attended the Sunday service or the Wednesday evening testimony meeting or a Christian Science lecture, she hoped she might receive from the reading, the hymns, the solo, the testimonies, or the lecture the inspiration which would free her from her suffering. And yet, after months of such seeking, she was not healed.
