When Christian Science came...
When Christian Science came into my life in 1927 I had no idea to what extent my thinking would be revolutionized. I was healed of consumption. In the degree that I came to see God as good, the illness disappeared and I was free. Many other beautiful healings have taken place in our family. I cannot be grateful enough also for the wonderful protection we experienced during the war.
One morning in February, 1945, the part of the city in which we lived was destroyed by incendiary bombs. I was in an air-raid shelter with most of the other inhabitants of our five-story house. Hardly had we reached the shelter when the bombs began falling. Then the lights went out. In my distress I cried aloud to God. In half an hour it was quiet and we returned to the yard. All around, the houses were in flames. My husband came home from his near-by place of work to see if I was unharmed, then hurried back to assist in saving people from the burning houses. I returned to the air-raid shelter. Dense smoke had penetrated there and one could hardly breathe. We were told we could not be saved, for everything around us was a sea of flames. I turned wholly to Spirit, God, knowing that God is our Life, and I became calm. Then unconsciously I began to do things, following God's direction. I soaked my handkerchief in water and covered my mouth and nose. Then a voice said: Go outside. When I had passed the yard and the burning house in front, I stopped. Fire was raging all down the street, but some power impelled me to go on. Without hesitation, knowing only that God was protecting me, I walked into the flames, stumbling over burning beams, until I felt a cool breath of air. Love had led me to the only park in our neighborhood.
A great many people from surrounding houses had already found refuge there. We waited, showered with sparks, until the morning began to dawn. This is where my husband found me. Both of us were unharmed. We knew that our spiritual home is in God, and before long we found a furnished apartment, in which was everything we needed. Through this bitter experience I learned that in every extremity God does meet our needs when we turn trustingly to Him. By clinging firmly to the truth that God governs, we were able to withstand the pressure put upon us to join the National Socialist Party.
