In 1919 I was in my early twenties...
In 1919 I was in my early twenties and was miserable with a very severe case of skin disease which I had had since I was a small boy. It got worse as I grew older. I had tried not only the doctors of medicine but also Indian herb doctors, receiving little or no relief from any of them. Toward the last there were some doctors who would not take the case at all.
At this time I was living in Michigan. A friend from Chicago who was not a Christian Scientist at the time, but who had witnessed a healing of a neighbor, told me about Christian Science and convinced me that it would heal me. This friend gave me the name and address of a practitioner in Chicago. I wrote the practitioner and explained my case in detail to her. She answered my letter immediately and told me where I might buy the textbook. Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. She also gave me some references to study, one of which has always been an inspiration to me when I have been confronted with any problem. It is on page 390 of Science and Health and reads as follows: "We cannot deny that Life is self-sustained, and we should never deny the everlasting harmony of Soul, simply because, to the mortal senses, there is seeming discord. It is our ignorance of God, the divine Principle, which produces apparent discord, and the right understanding of Him restores harmony."
The practitioner also told me that she would take up work for me. The following day I was in a mental fog; I mean by this that I did not feel like reading, eating, working, or taking part in any activity. The next day this cleared away, and it seemed to me that I was in a new world. In reality, I was. I then began to make steady progress, and in less than six weeks I was healed and my skin was like that of a newborn child, thanks to Almighty God and this kind and loving practitioner, whom I have never seen. This pearl of great price I had discovered has been a great blessing to me.
It was not more than a couple of months after this first healing that I was called upon again to prove the healing efficacy of Christian Science. I was cranking an old automobile, and the engine backfired. The crank was stuck; it whirled around, hit me on the lower part of the arm just above the wrist, and broke it. The woman in whose home I was staying called in a doctor. He took me to an office building where there was a doctor with an X-ray machine. They X-rayed my arm and set it. After the arm was set and placed in a splint, it was bandaged tightly, and as a result it began to ache. This took place early on a Thursday evening. During this process I sent a telegram to the same practitioner. After I sent the wire I cut the bandage. To avoid any undue criticism, I left the bandage around my arm and had the arm in a sling. I then went to my room, lay down on the bed, and slept until the next morning. When I arose I had no pain or soreness in the arm. That morning I got an answer to my telegram. The practitioner said that she would work for me and all would be well.
At this time I was running a barber shop. On Friday I went to the shop to tell the other two boys of my trouble. That day I did nothing. I also went to the shop on Saturday morning, not to work, but just to look after the business. When I came in that morning, one of the boys made an unprincipled demand upon me for what he thought I would submit to because of my handicap. When this occurred, I told him I should be able to get along without his services. I removed the contrivance from my arm and went to work without the slightest difficulty. I knew then that the arm was healed that Friday morning when I arose and had no soreness in it.
Is it any wonder we Christian Scientists are truly grateful to our Father-Mother God? I have had many healings over the years since the experiences related in this testimony, for which I am grateful. My membership in The Mother Church is the greatest blessing that has ever come to me. I am grateful also for membership in a branch church and to have the privilege of serving this church.—George J. Goldman, Detroit, Michigan.
