It is indeed a great privilege to...
It is indeed a great privilege to testily to the healing power of Christian Science. I can truthfully say that until I took up the study of it I never knew a well day and had very few really happy ones.
My first healing in Science was of the necessity for wearing eyeglasses. This healing came about through my reading of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy.
The second healing was of a so-called incurable skin disease which had been on my face from the time of my birth. When I was a child my mother bought many different kinds of washes and salves for this condition, but they were of no avail. A short time after I began to read Science and Health the disease was so aggravated that it became an unsightly condition of running sores. My friends all predicted that I would have scars on my face for life. Then it was that I asked a friend for my first Christian Science treatment. In less than two weeks there was not a trace of this discordant condition remaining. My gratitude for these physical healings knows no bounds, but it is much greater for having got my first glimpse of the truth about God and man. I felt myself being released from the old beliefs of false theology in which I had been reared.
The first two or three years after beginning the study of Christian Science, I devoured the works of our Leader and experienced several quick healings, but I was soon to have a testing time and an experience for which I shall never cease to be grateful. After that experience I could never have any doubt that Christian Science is able to, heal every human problem. Almost overnight I was stricken with a serious illness that made it practically impossible to stand erect, accompanied by pain so violent that only with the greatest effort could I keep from screaming. At the time I was living with some Christian Science friends, who found a nursing home for me and secured the services of a practitioner and nurse. No words could ever express the gratitude I feel for that practitioner and nurse and for all the loving friends who stood by me during this trying ordeal. I surely proved that God is Love, and that Christian Scientists know how to demonstrate this when Mrs. Eddy's teachings are faithfully and understanding followed.
I was confined to bed for many weeks with extreme fever. A condition developed that rendered one of my legs useless for a time. I also lost nearly all my hair. I am happy to say that my hair quickly grew back in, and I gained the use of the leg again, even though for a year or two I limped. But all discord has been met through the constant application of the teachings of Christian Science. I should like to add that since this healing, to satisfy my family, none of whom are Scientists, I related the symptoms to a doctor, who said he was amazed that was alive to tell about it; that if it were not for Christian Science I never could have lived. So you can understand something of my gratitude to our dear Leader, Mrs. Eddy, for giving us this religion.
For daily healings of friction, impatience, fears, beliefs of lack and limitation in its many phases, and for being enabled by a loving Father-Mother God to love more, I am humbly grateful. I am happy to be a member of The Mother Church, to be employed in the Christian Science movement, and to have had the priceless privilege of class instruction with a student of our dear Leader. For all these and main other blessings too numerous to mention I am humbly thankful to God.—(Miss) Ethel Delilah Purdy, Boston, Massachusetts.
