While engaged in public school...

While engaged in public school teaching some time ago, ignorant of Christian Science and its healing truths, I made the statement that it was permissible for an adult to choose the healing method he wished for himself, but certainly no sensible person would consider Christian Science treatment to be wise or adequate to meet the needs of a sick, defenseless child.

The time came when I had children of my own. The religion in which I had been brought up had not given me a satisfactory understanding of God. From one orthodox church to another we went in search of this understanding. We found it in Christian Science and in the Christian Science Sunday School.

Just previous to this search the younger child developed a condition of nausea, fever, and sore throat. A doctor was called, who gave the disease a name, and said the fever would continue for a few days, and then convalescence would begin. And it was so. The following year, after the children had attended the Christian Science Sunday School for a few weeks, the same symptoms appeared again in the same child. I recognized it as a testing time. Did I still believe the statement I had made previously while teaching? This was a child, not an adult. Should I call the doctor? We knew no practitioners in the town. I had been reading "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, attending the church services, and studying the Lesson-Sermons. I knew the statements I had been reading were true, and if they were true then they were demonstrable.
