The Path of Love

In the course of our mental journey from a material sense of existence to the understanding of life in God we not infrequently seem to find ourselves confronted by some phase of fear, that common yet baseless enemy of mankind. But through the study and practice of Christian Science we learn to prove the utter nothingness of this false claim of a power apart from God, Love.

The Bible relates many instances of the overcoming of fear and of its powerlessness to hinder progress and right activity. On page 454 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy we find this statement: "Love inspires, illumines, designates, and leads the way. Right motives give pinions to thought, and strength and freedom to speech and action."

A Christian Scientist of a rather timid disposition once received an invitation to undertake a certain task for the branch church of which he was a member, a task which necessitated speaking in public. After reading the invitation and contemplating the work before him, he was overwhelmed by fear. He had not been able to express a single word of gratitude at the Wednesday testimony meetings, and now he was asked to face what seemed to him a far more trying ordeal. Personal sense ventured the suggestion: It is obvious that this invitation has been extended to you under a misapprehension, since you are clearly not ready for so great a step. If you attempt it, you are bound to fail. The wise course is to decline the invitation.
