"Kind hearts are more than coronets"

When Tennyson wrote the words, "Kind hearts are more than coronets," he expressed a profound truth which finds a ready response in every human heart. How often have discord and strife been dispelled by the healing touch of kindness! How often have animosity and sinister motives been transformed into kindly thoughts and intentions by a few gracious words or by some generous deed!

The root meaning of the word "kindness" refers to that which is "natural," "innate." Most dictionaries continue the definition with a list of the qualities which are included in the nature of kindness, such as graciousness, benevolence, tenderness, compassion, generosity, gentleness, affection.

Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, reveals the great fact that all that is truly natural is born of God, is spiritual and eternally good. In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" she writes (p. 119), "God is natural good, and is represented only by the idea of goodness; while evil should be regarded as unnatural, because it is opposed to the nature of Spirit, God." Kindness accompanies every expression of the divine nature. Kindness is therefore natural to man, who is made in God's image and likeness.
