"Arise, shine; for thy light is come"

For one student the light of God shone brightly during the dark years when her country was occupied by an enemy. This was possible because the study of Christian Science gives an understanding of the ever-presence of God. And God's presence always gives light. In the account of creation, God's first command is (Gen. 1:3). "Let there be light." And the account continues, "And there was light."

A student of Christian Science meditated deeply upon this light. She realized that since God is present, the light of Truth and Love is present. She understood how necessary it is to demonstrate what one understands of Truth and Love. Constantly the words from Isaiah (60:1) came to her thought, "Arise, shine; for thy light is come." She found them to be a challenge to give praise to God for protection, guidance, and blessings during the hard years.

This student began to count her blessings, for had she not been fed, had she not learned to do without things formerly deemed quite necessary and been able to buy necessities which she could not make herself? Her clothes were not worn out. Her home had been protected. Her eyes had been opened to look deeper into reality, to see more clearly the man whom God creates, and to feel great compassion for those who apparently dwelt in darkness. She felt strongly that all men had the same right to know God and to study His commandments.
