True Disillusionment

How bright, so many times, are the promises of life held out by the so-called human mind, how sparkling the hopes, how great the expectations! With what confidence one faces these bright promises, only too often to have them betrayed, and fade drably into unfulfillment. This is called being disillusioned. It is the result of a mistaken sense of what is illusion and what is fact; of misplaced confidence in the power of materiality to fulfill its own promises. If there were no such misplaced confidence there would be no disappointed hopes. On page 95 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mary Baker Eddy writes: "Lulled by stupefying illusions, the world is asleep in the cradle of infancy, dreaming away the hours. Material sense does not unfold the facts of existence; but spiritual sense lifts human consciousness into eternal Truth." Christian Science is bringing about true disillusionment, waking men from the illusions of the material senses to see the spiritual facts of being.

Christ Jesus gave the foundation of these facts in his declaration, "God is a Spirit"—more correctly translated, "God is Spirit"—"and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth." Spirit, then, must be acknowledged as cause and effect, the only power of creation. God being Spirit, His creation is the unfolding of spiritual ideas. It is not fabricated of perishable stuff, built and destroyed and rebuilt by the devices of men. It is not constituted of nonintelligent forces, energies, gases, or vibratory action. It is constituted of divine ideas and qualities of Mind, which are indestructible, eternal, self-perpetuating, and omnipotently beneficent.

Spiritual facts, divine ideas and qualities, are neither ancient nor modern; they represent divine, unchanging Principle. They exist in immutable indestructibility from everlasting to everlasting. They are not subject to modern inventions. They are age-proof. They are bomb-proof. They remain unshattered by any physical so-called force, undeviated by any material attraction, their glory undimmed and their power undiminished by the passage of time. They are substance. No illusion of the senses has power to penetrate the omnipotence, omnipresence and omniscience of divine Principle. Through Christian Science mankind is being made to awaken to these spiritual facts and to face the impotence of its own illusions to save it from the illusion of destruction.
