One Hour

Material things were crying for attention;
They threatened to monopolize the day.
If I can get them only partly finished,
A moment I will snatch, I said, to pray.

Dear God, I prayed, give me the understanding
To manifest Thy wisdom and Thy power.
The answer came to me—it was a question:
"What, could ye not watch with me one hour?"

"One hour?" That is not asking much, I pondered;
I can, I will; and to my books I turned.
The things that seemed important were forgotten;
With spiritual things alone was I concerned.

And then, with actions accurate, unlabored,
I calmly ventured to reflect God's power.
My duties done, I helped a burdened brother;
What fruitage for one precious, prayerful hour!
