The Joyous Business of Giving

Christian Science shows mankind how to give more freely. It lifts human consciousness, above the withholding which stems from a sense of lack to a generosity which flows from an understanding of spiritual abundance. It points to the life of Christ Jesus as the highest example of giving, because when he satisfied the human needs of those he helped he also opened their thought to an understanding of God. In changing the water into wine and in feeding the multitude, in destroying sin and in healing disease, he demonstrated the availability of divine power to meet every human need.

To the Samaritan woman at the well he spoke of the gift of living water and said (John 4:14), "Whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life." His gifts were drawn from a spiritual source, and so he could offer them with full assurance.

Our Master was constantly giving. True giving heals. When Mary Baker Eddy says in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 259), "The divine nature was best expressed in Christ Jesus, who threw upon mortals the truer reflection of God and lifted their lives higher than their poor thought-models would allow, —thoughts which presented man as fallen, sick, sinning, and dying." she gives us a basis from which to practice true giving. In our associations with those in our family, with our friends, with colleagues at work, and with those whom we meet and pass as strangers in the street, in trains, or in shops, we can give much by steadfastly knowing that the only true man is the man of God's creating.
