The Certainty of Truth's Healing

Healing by Christian Science is accomplished through the application of God's divine law to human beliefs. Since what God knows is real, and what mortals believe is unreal, it is not possible to stop this healing effect. "Ye shall know the truth," promised the Master (John 8:32), "and the truth shall make you free." On page 3 of "Pulpit and Press" Mary Baker Eddy writes, "Know, then, that you possess sovereign power to think and act rightly, and that nothing can dispossess you of this heritage and trespass on love."

In mortal resistance to the law of God, good, is found the only reason for the lapse of time which may occur between the application of this law and the result.

To the consciousness which believes both evil and good to be real, the law of Christ comes, awakening the believer to know that since God only is true, good alone is real. Acceptance of this truth leads the believer out of the false results of his ignorance into the glorious results of knowing what is actual—good only.

The belief that evil is real and has the intelligence, tenacity, substance and power to maintain itself in the presence of God is the basis of all false claims, and these claims need refuting. The truth needs to be understood that Mind only knows, that Love alone loves. Life alone lives. Spirit creates. Soul identifies, and Principle sustains. When the law of spiritual reality is intelligently applied to the empty boastings of evil's claims, then those claims have no more ability to maintain themselves as cause or result than darkness has to withstand light.

Healing is inevitable. The length of the interval between the discovery that one has been deceived into believing evil real and the disappearance of the results of such believing is determined by the clarity of one's understanding and one's faithfulness in applying the truth he understands.

Persistence is easier when healing results are known to be inevitable. Proof of this is furnished in the following experience. A student who had suffered great difficulty in overcoming a physical problem, involving much pain during many years, was faced with the need of traveling thousands of miles by train and water in times when air-conditioning was only a prospect. Accustomed though he was to acute discomfort, the journey seemed unbearable. Exhausted at its conclusion, he had but one conviction: that only persistence in knowing the inevitability of God's promises would prove His allness. Calling on a faithful Christian Science practitioner to sustain this conviction, he fell asleep and slept without an interruption for the first time in twelve years, and awakened to find himself completely and permanently healed. Every vestige of the discordant physical evidence had disappeared overnight.

What brought about the healing? God's love, which had been sought through a dozen years of continuous study of the Christian Science textbooks, the Bible and "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, as well as our Leader's other writings and the authorized Christian Science literature. All this prior seeking had been but preparation for sudden finding. Evil was proved never to have been anything but a false sense of its own misconceiving, a lie of the father of lies.

With or without help, regardless of time, may we persist with faith in Truth. Thus we shall ever win because God's will alone is done in earth as it is in heaven, and the reward of persistence in truth is inevitable.
