My gratitude for Christian Science...
My gratitude for Christian Science overflows, for my healings have been many. Fear, colds, throat trouble, sorrow, oak poisoning, blindness, influenza, smoking, drinking, nervousness, and a physical breakdown have all been overcome through the application of Science.
In the experience of the breakdown, a young woman who saw my condition inquired if I knew anything about Christian Science. My answer was that I knew very little about it. I was, however, willing to learn and to go to a practitioner for help and healing. I had previously been examined by two specialists. The heart specialist said that it would be necessary for me to retire, possibly for a year or two, maybe permanently. The throat specialist announced that an operation was necessary.
Taking the young woman's advice, I drove to the practitioner's office, and upon arriving there was completely prostrate. Although every symptom and condition seemed aggravated, I tried desperately hard to "be still" and attentive to what the practitioner was telling me. One sentence remained clear, but at that time was beyond my comprehension: "Whatever it is your duty to do, you can do without harm to yourself" (Science and Health by Mary Baker Eddy, p. 385). She asked me to return home and read Science and Health. I listened and was obedient. I did read, during the day and far into the nights. I did not retire or have the throat operation, but have been working ever since with a different aim, motive, and desire.
