No words could ever express my...
No words could ever express my gratitude to God for Christian Science and for the consecrated life of our beloved Leader. Mary Baker Eddy, which enabled her to give this religion to the world.
For over thirty years Christian Science has brought innumerable blessings to me and to my son. During these years we have had many quick healings, often when our need has been great. Sometimes healings have come to me through the loving help of a Christian Science practitioner, and for all of these I am unceasingly grateful. At other times healing has come solely through my striving to gain a deeper understanding of Truth and vigorously denying material sense evidence.
One such healing, for which I am unspeakably grateful, and which came to me over a year ago, was that of sudden and complete deafness in one ear. I became aware that there was something wrong with one of my ears. Although there was no actual pain there was considerable discomfort, and the thought persisted that something needed to be removed. I actually tried to do this, but I could find nothing to remove, I knew such thinking was most unscientific, in the light of our Leader's definition of "ears" in the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health (p. 585), which reads in part as follows: "Not organs of the so-called corporeal senses, but spiritual understanding." Still mortal mind seemed very persistent in declaring that something would have to come away.
Then one night I awoke to find that what appeared to be water was flowing freely from the ear. I felt greatly relieved, and soon went to sleep again. However, when I awoke in the morning I was dismayed to find that I could not hear a sound with that ear, not even a quite loudly ticking clock when I pressed my ear close against it. I felt rather alarmed, but realized I must begin at once to do some very earnest work to correct my thinking.
As I was endeavoring to do this I read in a religious article in a copy of The Christian Science Monitor this verse quoted from the Bible (Isa. 50:4): "The Lord God hath given me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him that is weary: he wakeneth morning by morning, he wakeneth mine ear to hear as the learned." I saw quite clearly that "the learned" were those who could definitely realize something of that spiritual understanding given as part of the definition of "ears" in the textbook.
The words of this verse from Isaiah came to me as a direct angel message, and I held firmly to them for many days. 'Meanwhile! persistently denied the arguments of mortal mind, which tried to frighten me with the thought that the hearing had completely gone.
After several days of this study I had a very encouraging sign that all was well. I became aware for just a few seconds that I could hear all the usual sounds around me quite clearly. Something seemed suddenly to have lifted, then as quickly it fell again, and the thought that there was something in the ear which would have to be removed came to me most vividly. However, I refused to be discouraged. I continued to hold firmly to the truth, vigorously denying the false evidence of the senses and giving every moment I could to study, especially to daily careful study of the Lesson-Sermon.
After studying in this way for a few more days I awoke one morning and knew that I could hear. At first some sounds seemed rather faint, but in a few hours the hearing was absolutely normal and it has remained so ever since, now more than a year.
I am indeed grateful to God for this further proof in my experience of His ever-healing presence, also for His great gift to mankind, Christian Science.—(Mrs.) Margaret E. Hobson, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
