"There was no room for them in the inn"

Wisemen beheld the guiding star,
The daystar of true worth;
The watchful shepherds heard the song
Of angels in a heavenly throng,
And marked the lowly birth.

The Roman law demanded tax;
Innkeepers cried, "No room,"
But no injustice could conceal
The light that came to bless and heal,
And pierce the mortal gloom.

Earth consciousness lay fast asleep,
Nor rose to greet the light,
Nor gave heed to the Saviour's birth,
The herald of Christ, Truth, to earth;
So limited was sight.

Only the wise and humble knew,
Only the child heart heard;
The carnal would deny him place,
But sinless consciousness finds space
Sufficient for God's Word.
