A Child's Christmas

A part of the training of the little child in the Christian Science Sunday School is the cultivation of love for the Bible and the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and the development of appreciation for the message of Truth, Life, and Love which they convey. Children so trained begin at a very early age to read from these books the "first lessons" which they are taught in Sunday School (see Church Manual, Art. XX, Sect.3).

The following story of a little girl and her books was related by her Sunday School teacher in a letter to the superintendent of the Sunday School.

In response to a request from her grandmother for a recommendation as to an acceptable Christmas gift for a little seven-year-old girl in my Sunday School class, the mother proposed the Bible and Science and Health. These, together with a little case to hold the books, were purchased and sent on to the grandmother in another city to await the little girl's arrival at Christmas time. The grandfather, who was not a Christian Scientist, was deeply concerned over what he considered a most unsuitable gift for a little child. He felt so strongly about it that he purchased several gifts to make up for what he was certain would be disappointment.
