The Secret and Safe Place

Betty was a little girl who had known the protection of Christian Science all of her ten years. From the time she was a baby, the truth had been talked and read to her. When just a toddler she learned to say, "God is Love," and soon after learned the Ten Commandments, the Beatitudes, and the Lord's Prayer with its spiritual interpretation as given in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. As soon as she was old enough, she went to a Christian Science Sunday School, where she learned more about God and man in His likeness.

Now she was in the fifth grade in grammar school, and this particular day she was hurrying home to tell her mother about something that had happened. The nurse had visited her room the day before and again today, which was unusual, and when she had come this morning, she had looked very grave and announced there was an epidemic in the school. Four cases of a supposedly serious disease had been reported from this one room, and the nurse said she would examine the children every day for the next two weeks.

Mother did not seem alarmed by the report, but neither did she ignore it. She laid aside the work she was doing and reached for her Bible and her Science books, Science and Health and Prose Works by Mrs. Eddy. "Let's see what protection God has given us," said Mother.
