The prayer of Jesus was a prayer of faith, not fear. In time of danger he fortified himself by his implicit trust in the goodness of God. Sending his disciples forth upon a mission of teaching and mercy, he counseled them, "Fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell." He was not advising his men to disregard safety, but he was arming them against fear....
A protecting faith in the goodness of God is our only real protection. This was the great achievement of the Psalmist who sang, "Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death. I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me."...
