Children of Light

[Of Special Interest to Children]

Judy and Stephen were only four and five years old, but they both went to the Christian Science Sunday School and were learning to use the truth they were taught there to keep them happy and well. They knew many verses from the Bible and a few simple statements from "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. They were also rapidly becoming familiar with the hymns. Their daddy or mother often played them on the piano at home, and they all sang; or Mother would read the words and Stephen and Judy would repeat them, for they had been memorizing verses ever since they could talk. They even liked to make up verses to help them remember little tasks, or to make difficulties easier, or just for fun to make them laugh.

The family had recently moved to a new house and the children had a big room alone, where they slept and played. One of the things in it that they liked best was a lamp which they could easily turn on themselves. The winter mornings were very dark, and when they awoke early they liked to turn it on and play in its bright glow before time to dress for breakfast.

Their mother had told them that when they were wide awake they never needed to stay in the dark, but could turn on the lamp for light. In granting them this permission she had read them a lovely verse from the Bible which says (I Thess. 5:5), "Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness."
